There are two ways a WordPress plugin can read a Google Drive. The choice decides how often the connection breaks, and what it costs you over the years.
Reading a Drive through "Sign in with Google" needs a scope Google classifies as restricted. Until the app clears verification, its access stops working after seven days and the client has to reconnect. A service account has nothing that expires: the connection is still up two years later.
A restricted scope also brings a yearly security assessment, run by an approved third party at the developer's expense. That cost lives inside somebody's price. Here there is nothing to certify, because the plugin never asks for access to anyone's Drive: it reads the folder you shared with it, and nothing else.
No consent screen asking for a whole Drive. You share one folder with an address, and that is the entire perimeter. Taking the access away is one click in Drive, on your side, without asking us and without waiting for anyone.

Yes, and it is a deliberate choice: it is the only way to guarantee that a link does not work outside the reserved area. Transfer happens in chunks, so PHP memory is not saturated, but server bandwidth is used. The maximum file size is configurable in the settings.

A service account is a technical identity inside your own Google Cloud project. You share one folder with its address, and the plugin sees that folder and nothing else. No consent screen, no verification, no expiry, and access narrower than the sign-in flow would have given.
They have no downloadable content as they are, so the plugin exports them on the fly: Word, Excel and PowerPoint for the download, PDF for the preview. Nothing is copied into your Drive and nothing is written back.
It reduces the surface a great deal, but it is not absolute protection: anyone who can see content on screen can photograph it. With downloads off the plugin never delivers the original bytes - images are downscaled and PDFs are not displayed - so the source file stays out of reach. Stricter requirements need DRM, which this plugin does not implement.
